The Americas Film Festival NY abre el jueves 13 de junio en el Instituto Cervantes NY con el estreno de la exitosa película argentina LA EXTORSIÓN de Martino Zaidelis
El Festival cierra con el estreno en Nueva York de FRYBREAD FACE AND ME del cineasta Navajo, Hopi Billy Luther el viernes 21 de junio en el Museo Nacional del Indio Americano.
Todas las proyecciones son gratuitas y abiertas al público, y las películas están subtituladas en inglés
Nueva York, 15 de mayo de 2024 – La 11ª edición del Festival de Cine de las Américas de Nueva York (www.TAFFNY.com) presenta nueve largometrajes y más de 25 cortometrajes, celebrando la rica diversidad de las historias, lenguas y culturas de las Américas. El Festival abre oficialmente el jueves 13 de junio a las 6:00 pm en el Instituto Cervantes NY (211 E 49th Street, NYC) con el estreno en Nueva York de La Extorsión de Martino Zaidelis, la película más taquillera de Argentina en 2023. El reconocido actor Guillermo Francella interpreta a Alejandro, un piloto a punto de jubilarse que es chantajeado y obligado a transportar una carga misteriosa de Buenos Aires a Madrid para evitar ser penalizado por una falta grave que cometió en el trabajo. TAFFNY es gratuito y abierto al público. Todas las películas en idiomas extranjeros están subtituladas en inglés.
TAFFNY clausura el viernes 21 de junio a las 6:00 pm con la ceremonia de entrega de premios para los cortometrajes en competencia en el Museo Nacional del Indio Americano (1 Bowling Green, NYC), seguida del estreno en Nueva York de Frybread Face and Me del director Navajo/Hopi/Laguna Pueblo, Billy Luther. La película sigue a dos primos adolescentes Navajo, de diferentes mundos, durante un verano en el rancho de su abuela en Arizona; allí aprenden sobre el pasado de su familia y sobre ellos mismos. El director Billy Luther estará presente para una sesión de preguntas y respuestas.
El Dr. Juan Carlos Mercado, Decano de la División de Estudios Interdisciplinarios en el Centro para la Educación de los Trabajadores (CWE) del City College de Nueva York y cofundador de TAFFNY, dice sobre el Festival de este año: "Al celebrar nuestro 11º año, afirmamos con orgullo nuestro estatus como un faro de arte en el rico tapiz cultural de la ciudad. Al seleccionar estas películas, buscamos destacar historias a menudo pasadas por alto en los medios de comunicación principales y mostrar países raramente presentados en los principales festivales, alineándonos con la misión de CUNY y City College."
La competencia The Americas Short Films Competition está dedicada a promover y exhibir obras audiovisuales de formato de hasta 26 min de cineastas emergentes que retratan las inquietudes de los cineastas que viven en la región. Este año, TAFFNY presenta más de 25 cortometrajes que compiten por el Premio de las Américas en las categorías de Animación, Documental, Experimental y Ficción. Los jurados de las categorías de Documental y Animación incluyen a la directora Catalina Santamaria; al profesor de cine de la Universidad de Fairfield Sergio Adrada-Rafael y al profesor y periodista radial David Little. En las categorías de Ficción y Experimental, el jurado está compuesto por el guionista/autor Lopera-Sánchez, la cineasta Marina Fernández y el crítico de cine Armando Russi.
Durante el transcurso de 9 días, 17 países mostrarán parte de su identidad, cultura y diversidad a través del séptimo arte. El Panorama de las Américas es un programa dinámico que trae la riqueza de las culturas latinas a través de nueve largometrajes de ficción y documental premiados internacionalmente y de países como Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia, Perú, Honduras, México, España y Estados Unidos.
"Cada año, los cineastas y sus películas reflejan los esfuerzos y preocupaciones de sus sociedades. Esta vez, quisimos enfatizar temas como las historias de resiliencia de las mujeres, el poder del arte como catalizador del cambio, y las voces cada vez más poderosas de las comunidades nativas que demandan visibilidad. Las Américas son hogar de personas y culturas fascinantes e iluminadoras, y la misión de TAFFNY es llevar estas a la pantalla para que los neoyorquinos las experimenten, ¡y todo es gratis y muy divertido!", dice Diana Vargas, directora artística de TAFFNY.
TAFFNY fue creado para generar un espacio de apreciación cinematográfica enfocado en el multiculturalismo, la diversidad y las nuevas sociedades alrededor de las Américas, así como para fomentar el trabajo de nuevos directores de cine. El Festival es una iniciativa de la División de Estudios Interdisciplinarios en el Centro para la Educación de los Trabajadores (CWE) del City College de Nueva York (CCNY - CUNY), con el generoso apoyo del presidente de CCNY, Vincent Boudreau, y la vicepresidenta Dee Dee Mozeleski; CUNY-CCNY Quest, A Lifelong Learning Community, y la colaboración de prestigiosas instituciones como el Instituto Cervantes, el Museo Nacional del Indio Americano y el Consulado de Argentina en Nueva York.
